Podcast/Welcome to Night Vale
Welcome to Night Vale is a twice-monthly, New York City based podcast created and written by Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Cranor. Launched in 2012 and hosted by the fictional Cecil Gershwin Palmer, Welcome to Night Vale is set in the equally fictional Night Vale; a desert town where all of the conspiracy theories, urban legends, cryptids and other paranormal phenomenon that you've ever heard of are real and some of them are running the town, or at least trying to. Most episodes take the guise of a community radio show that's broadcast from Night Vale and, in addition to the goings-on in Night Vale, each episode includes a segment called "The Weather" which serves as a showcase for independent recording artists. The cast & crew of Welcome to Night Vale have also embarked on multiple national tours, each time performing new episodes that were written specifically for those tours. Recordings of these performances can be purchased on the show's Bandcamp page.
Upon first listen, Welcome to Night Vale might seem bizarre, macabre and absurd, because it is, but it also might seem random and pointless; with all of its talk of glow clouds, five-headed dragons and hooded figures in dog parks. However, for all of it's seemingly arbitrary weirdness, the series has several ongoing storylines and recurring characters. There's the hotly-contested Night Vale mayoral race in which Palmer's former intern, the incumbent Dana Cardinal, went up against Hiram McDaniels, a blogger & literal five-headed dragon, and The Faceless Old Woman who secretly lives in your home. There's Tamika Flynn who, at 13 years old, led several local children in a rebellion against the vicious Night Vale librarians who had kidnapped them and later that year organized those same children into an army to take on the evil corporation, Strexcorp, and there's the Night Vale Dog Park, which has served as a meeting place for mysterious, hooded figures and turned out to contain a doorway to another dimension. Of course, these are just a few of the compelling storylines that have led Welcome to Night Vale to the top of the iTunes charts and that continue to make it one of the most fascinating works of fiction that I have ever encountered in any medium.
I'll leave you with Welcome to Night Vale's latest episode. You can find every episode on the show's Libsyn page and most on its Youtube page. You can subscribe to Welcome to Night Vale on iTunes. You can also visit the official site and buy recording so live episodes on the Welcome to Night Vale Bandcamp page.
