My name is John H Maloney and I'm a writer, musician & podcaster based in New Jersey.

I decided to start the rec list as a way to extend the constant stream of recommendations that I've been posting on social media for years. I've recently realized that media curation is a passion of mine and now I want to try reach a larger audience. Every week I'll be posting recommendations for movies, music, anime, podcasts, Youtube channels, books, tv shows and any other media I find & feel compelled to share.

In addition to writing the rec list, I'm also the co-host and producer of a b-movie & cult movie review podcast called Zombie Take-Out.

Youtube/Miss Mousie Mouse

Miss Mousie Mouse is an American voice actor, internet personality & the host of her eponymously named Youtube channel. Her channel is ostensibly focused on video games, but with a bit of a twist. Instead of producing typical Let's Play videos, Mousie uses games like Minecraft and The Sims to tell original stories, with the games effectively serving as 3D animation software and, in her Minecraft Roleplay videos, members of her audience helping out by controlling the other characters and building the sets. She also features multiplayer games, such as Twin Saga & Minecraft mini games, that give her the opportunity to play with her viewers, and when she does produce the occasional, more conventional Let's Play video, Mousie often chooses offbeat, darkly comedic titles like Slime Rancher, Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle or particularly cute fare such as Animal Jam and various Disney games. Additionally, she participates in periodic, collaborative series that allow her to record with other gaming Youtubers and all of these videos feature Mousie's inimitable sense of humor; full of awkwardness, eclectic references, quirky tangent and her fondness for Cthulhu. Mousie's unique personal aesthetic has also become a significant part of her brand. She's known almost as much for her wildly colored, ever-changing hair & singular fashion sense as she is for her videos and she's vlogged about her experiences with getting a tattoo & a septum piercing.

There are currently three ongoing Minecraft Roleplay series on Mousie's channel: Diner Dash, Mousie's Mysteries Presents: "The Hat" & Santa's Workshop. Now in its second season, Diner Dash chronicles Mousie's efforts to open a restaurant. In the first season, she inherited a run-down, boardwalk diner and attempted to get it up and running again, while contending with cut-throat competition, a problematic, temporary employee and an unwanted guest in the restroom. Not to mention her share of demanding customers & dine and dashers, as well as the obligatory visit from the health inspector. Season two finds Mousie expanding her franchise to a remote tropical island to fix up a tiki bar, with the help of Captain Lewis, only to once again have to contend with Food Flash, her nemesis from season one. She also has to deal with an imposing primate, a very different sort of clientele, an elusive fruit and an unlikely legal battle. Possibly inspired by real events, Mousie's Mysteries Presents: "The Hat" follows Detective Mousie as she desperately tries to track down her missing, favorite hat and in her latest series, Santa's Workshop, Mousie finds herself magically transported to the North Pole and conscripted into working in the titular shop, only to learn that things aren't so holly jolly under the employ of Old Saint Nick. As I mentioned earlier, it isn't just Minecraft that Mousie uses to tell her stories. City Living, her series devoted to the latest expansion for The Sims 4, tells the story of Hazel Bones; a young woman trying to establish herself and find love in the big city, with Mousie both narrating and serving as Hazel's conscience. Of course, this is just a small sampling of videos that you'll find on her channel. Amid a seemingly endless sea of virtually identical gaming channels on Youtube, Miss Mousie Mouse has found a way to use her unique and considerable talents to create content that is truly one of a kind.

I'll leave you with the debut episode of Santa's Workshop and her two-part series, The Gnomes, from earlier this year; a personal favorite of mine. You'll find the rest of Mousie's videos on her Youtube channel. You can also visit her official site and watch her stream live on her Twitch channel. Please note that, due to her impending vacation in England, she won't be streaming live again until late January 2017, but until then you can find videos of her recent streams on her Twitch channel as well.

If there's a movie, recording artist, anime, podcast or any other media that you'd like me to check out for possible inclusion on the rec list, please contact me and let me know about it.
