My name is John H Maloney and I'm a writer, musician & podcaster based in New Jersey.

I decided to start the rec list as a way to extend the constant stream of recommendations that I've been posting on social media for years. I've recently realized that media curation is a passion of mine and now I want to try reach a larger audience. Every week I'll be posting recommendations for movies, music, anime, podcasts, Youtube channels, books, tv shows and any other media I find & feel compelled to share.

In addition to writing the rec list, I'm also the co-host and producer of a b-movie & cult movie review podcast called Zombie Take-Out.

Movie/Free Troma Films

Troma Entertainment has garnered quite the reputation in its 40+ years of making & distributing independent films. Notoriously schlocky, gory, violent, lurid, exploitative & very politically incorrect, but also often packed with social & political commentary, Troma's work has become the gold standard in films that are 'so bad, they're good' and have helped launch the careers of stars such as Trey Parker & Matt Stone, James Gunn, Samuel L. Jackson, Marisa Tomei, Billy Bob Thorton, Kevin Costner & J. J. Abrams. Through it all, the company has maintained the independent, ultra low-budget, DIY approach that has built its brand and given it a place in the hearts of fans around the world.

Founded in 1974 by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, Troma initially released sex comedies, The First Turn-On! & Squeeze Play! and even provided production support for art-house classic, My Dinner With Andre, a film that's more or less the polar opposite of the kind that made Troma its name. However, it wasn't until 1985 that the company released its most famous film, The Toxic Avenger. With The Toxic Avenger, Troma found its winning formula and the film's titular character, often nicknamed Toxie, has even gone onto become the company's mascot. Over the years, Troma has followed up with transgressive, schlock-ridden classics like Class of Nuke 'Em High, Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., and my personal favorite, Tromeo & Juliet, cementing it's reputation for decades to come.

Recently, Troma graciously made well over 100 of its films freely available on one of its Youtube channels. The list includes the aforementioned classics Class of Nuke 'Em High & Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., as well as Parker & Stone's Cannibal The Musical, the James Gunn penned Tromeo & Julie and many, many more. Here is a playlist of all of the films and I'll leave you with a couple of select trailers to whet your appetite.

If there's a movie, band, podcast or any other media that you'd like me to check out for possible inclusion on the rec list, please contact me and let me know about it.
