My name is John H Maloney and I'm a writer, musician & podcaster based in New Jersey.

I decided to start the rec list as a way to extend the constant stream of recommendations that I've been posting on social media for years. I've recently realized that media curation is a passion of mine and now I want to try reach a larger audience. Every week I'll be posting recommendations for movies, music, anime, podcasts, Youtube channels, books, tv shows and any other media I find & feel compelled to share.

In addition to writing the rec list, I'm also the co-host and producer of a b-movie & cult movie review podcast called Zombie Take-Out.

Music/Band-Maid

Band-Maid are an all-female hard rock band from Japan. Over the course of their three albums, Maid In Japan, New Beginning & Brand New Maid and two singles, Love, Passion, Matador & the soon to be released YOLO, their music has ranged from pop rock (emphasis on the pop) to hair metal to hard rock to thrash and maintained a signature sound throughout all of their stylistic changes, despite the fact that they didn't write any of their own songs until Brand New Maid. Formed in the summer of 2013 by vocalist Miku Kobato, Band-Maid first gained attention outside of Japan in 2015 with the video for their song, Thrill, which was initially released on Love, Passion, Matador and then included on New Beginning. In just a short time, they've gone onto build a considerable international following and gained more and more creative input, which has led to their music becoming increasingly aggressive and technical, while still remaining very melodic and catchy.

Of course, as their name implies, they do have a gimmick ... all of the band members wear maid uniforms. The intention of their costuming is to contrast the cuteness of the maid uniforms with the coolness of their music. Don't let their gimmick put you off, though. Instrumentalists Misa (bass), Kanami Touno (guitar) & Akane Hirose (drums) are world-class musicians, who merge tremendous technical prowess with their own unique playing styles and vocalists Kobato & Saiki Atsumi not only have great voices, but are brilliant performers. Saiki typifies the classic, cool, aloof rock frontwoman while Miku, drawing on her pop idol background and her experience working in a maid cafe, truly embodies the cuteness of their costuming.

I could go on, but I think I'll just let their music speak for itself with Thrill, the song that made them famous and YOLO, their latest single. In addition to their Youtube channel, which has videos for all of the singles they've released and a preview of Maid In Japan, you can find Maid In Japan, Love, Passion, Matador & New Beginning on iTunes, New Beginning & Brand New Maid on Amazon and Maid In Japan & Love, Passion, Matador on Spotify.

If there's a movie, band, podcast or any other media that you'd like me to check out for possible inclusion on the rec list, please contact me and let me know about it.
